This was probably our most fun food tour of the trip in Nishiki Market, which is an historic food market in central Kyoto. This was another one of the tours we booked through the website from our daughter’s sweepstakes win. It was supposed to be a group tour, but we were the only ones signed up for this Monday morning so it became a private tour.

We arrived via Uber/taxi a bit early so we walked through the market first and got a sense of what we might be eating on the tour. We met our tour guide at the nearby Apple Store and he took us into the market.

We started with some basic seasoned rice crackers.

From there, we moved on to some fried savory dough in some different flavors. They were a bit like okonomyaki.

Next up was a baby octopus stuffed with a quail egg. And yes we all ate one.

Then we moved on to pickles and some sort of fish pie.

From there, it was sweet potatoes and Japanese omelet.

Then, it was sweet pastry with a massive stick of butter inside. Super healthy I’m sure.

Finally, our guide picked up some tempura and some A5 wagyu beef and we had a final feast.

I definitely missed a stop or two in these pictures, but everything was delicious and everything was explained really well. We were totally stuffed after this tour.

After the tour, we took another walk through some of the stores at the end of the market and visited the shrine there.
