Thompson Nashville (Hyatt) Review

I was headed to Nashville for the weekend to watch the Liverpool preseason match. I originally booked the Virgin Hotel through Chase’s The Edit luxury hotel program to use up one of the hotel credits on a Chase Sapphire Reserve Business card. In the end, when my friend decided to join me, I switched to the Thompson for a few reason: 1) I couldn’t rebook the Virgin hotel for a 2-bed room and I didn’t want to risk it being sold out and not being able to switch; 2) I figured I might as well get 2 Hyatt elite qualifying nights along with my other Globalist benefits; 3) I haven’t stayed at a Thompson so this would also add to my Hyatt brand explorer count toward a free night and 4) I was driving my new (used) electric car there and I could get free parking and charging at the Thompson.

On the way to the hotel, I timed my drive to be able to pick up my friend at Nashville airport as he was flying in from South Florida. We arrived at the hotel around 2pm on a Friday. I didn’t ask about an upgrade as I knew all the suites were King bed only anyway. We were given a room on the 9th floor.

It was a fairly standard 2-bed room. The finishes were a bit nicer than your typical Hyatt Regency but nothing amazing for a category 6 Hyatt which cost me 25k per night (before the recent devaluation although the price stayed the same for our weekend after the devaluation).

The bed was comfortable and the hotel gets bonus points for having the shower controls at the rear of the shower where you don’t get soaked turning on the shower. The room had a minifridge (full of overpriced minibar items) and a coffee machine. There was a refillable glass water jug in the room and still/sparkling water dispensers in the hallway.

There’s a nightclub on the roof (12th floor) here and thankfully, I didn’t hear any noise from it (although I do use earplugs anyway). Our view from the 9th floor was of some other buildings in the Gulch area of Nashville.

Breakfast at the Thompson is available either at the main restaurant, Marsh House, or the coffee shop, LA Jackson. On Saturday morning, we went for breakfast at Marsh House. Here’s the menu:

Supposedly a Globalist gets $30 per person breakfast credit, but in reality, it seems to be unlimited within reason. We both ordered the lox and bagel and a coffee drink. I also got a side of fruit and a juice. Everything was zeroed out on my bill.

The bagel with lox, egg salad and cream cheese was a bit weird to be honest. It didn’t need the egg salad. I probably should have just ordered an omelet.

The second morning we were up early as I needed to leave for my long drive home. I was a bit annoyed that Marsh House doesn’t serve breakfast until 8am. I realize most people aren’t up at 8am on a Sunday, but I would think people with young kids or people who are early risers might like a sit-down breakfast. Instead we went to the coffee shop. Along with coffee, I got a breakfast sandwich and a strawberry matcha croissant.

The food was tasty, but it would have been nice to get a plate. Again, everything was zeroed out on the hotel bill.

The fairly small gym at the Thompson is on the second floor. I only got a bad picture through the glass door as it was busy. My friend went and said it was fine. I went for a walk instead.

I left around 9am to drive back to Atlanta. My friend’s flight wasn’t until 2:30pm, but the hotel proactively offered 4pm checkout if we needed it so he hung around until he needed to leave for his flight. The hotel seems to understand Globalist benefits quite well and doesn’t need a lot of prompting for following through on treating Hyatt status members appropriately.

Overall, the Thompson was fine but not amazing. I wouldn’t rush back and stay there again, but it served our needs as a base for our weekend activities. I prefer the Gulch to being right on Broadway as you can get around Nashville from there without being in the middle of the most crowded area. The weekend prices at hotels in Nashville are still kind of crazy, but more and more high-end hotels are opening which should hopefully improve competition and lower prices at some point. Getting free parking/charging, free breakfast and no destination fee was a win for me even though it came at a price of 50k Hyatt points for the weekend.
