A Fun Day in Cabo San Lucas

Happy New Year! This past weekend, my wife and I went to Todos, Santos, Mexico so she could attend a workshop given by a well-known sculpture artist. She really enjoyed her workshop and learned a lot. I was tagging along since it was in a place I had never been before.

We flew on Delta and thankfully got upgraded to Comfort Plus thanks to my Platinum status. I managed to book using Amex Membership Rewards points with the 35% rebate from the Amex Business Platinum card, so it was about 75k total Amex points per person booked a couple of weeks out which isn’t terrible for a last minute non-stop round-trip flight over the holidays. We stayed at a cute VRBO which I will review in a later post. We also rented a car from a local company, and I’ll have a post about that too. But first, I wanted to write about my day trip to Cabo San Lucas.

After I dropped my wife off at her workshop near Todos Santos around 9am, I headed south to Cabo San Lucas, about an hour and twenty minutes from Todos Santos. We had flown into Los Cabos airport (which is north-east of the city of Cabo San Lucas) the afternoon before and picked up the car, so I basically drove most of the journey back to the airport with a diversion further south to Cabo San Lucas.

I found parking in a garage attached to a huge mall near the marina. It ended up costing me about 70 pesos or about $3.50 for five hours of parking. I walked around the marina and grabbed a coffee in the mall before my scheduled whale watching tour at noon.

My tour was with Cabo Nature, and I highly recommend this company. We only had about 10 people on our boat plus a guide and captain. We went out into the Pacific west of the town (the Gulf of California is to the east) and saw a bunch of humpback whales. We also saw different types of sea birds, seals, and a flying fish. I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

On our last stop where we saw some more whales, I got the elusive whale-tail photo.

The tour lasted a little over two hours, and while you can take full day whale watching tours, that was enough for me. After returning to the marina, I walked over to Gardenia, a recommended taco spot in town not far from where I had parked.

I ordered shrimp, fish and pastor (pork) tacos and they were delicious. First, a whole bunch of toppings were brought out along with my beer (Negra Modelo).

Then my tacos were brought out. The total was around 300 pesos or $15 for all that food and a beer (plus a bottle of water to wash it all down).

After lunch, I made the trek back to Todos Santos to pick up my wife from her workshop. We of course went for tacos for dinner. šŸ™‚

I enjoyed my day in Cabo San Lucas in glorious weather. While it was a bit of trek to get there from Todos Santos, the driving was pretty easy, and the whales came out to play.
