Suite Life of Football Part 3 – American Airlines 777-300 JFK-LHR Flagship Business Review

Crew waiting to board at JFK gate

After a pleasant dinner and drinks at the Greenwich Lounge, I walked the terminal a bit just to get some steps in as our boarding was delayed a few minutes while the aircraft cleaners finished up. We boarded at Gate 6 in the spacious main concourse of Terminal 8.

Scheduled: 20:40-08:35 (+1 day)
Actual: 20:36-08:40 (+1 day)

In the end, they got the aircraft boarded fairly quickly. I chose window seat 10A in the middle of the main Flagship Business cabin. There are two rows of First at the very front with two rows of Business just behind, then a bulkhead with restrooms and the rest of Business Class between doors 1 and 2.

This is actually a great seat with lots of personal space and storage. I believe American is adding doors in the near future.

Probably the only drawback is how far your head is from the windows when seated which is usually the case with the angle of reverse herringbone seats. Unlike on AA’s 787, there’s no shoulder belt for takeoff and landing. A decent pillow and blanket was provided. The amenity kit was stocked with the regular stuff. The lip balm actually came in handy in the freezing, windy temperatures of Liverpool.

Predeparture beverages and menus were handed out.

Unfortunately for the purposes of this review, I decided to sleep rather than have dinner. I’m sure it was edible but nothing special.

We had a shorter taxi than I expected and were wheels up at 20:56. As soon as we took off, I reclined my seat flat and tried to catch some shut eye. The flight was smooth and I woke up about three hours later. As I couldn’t get back to sleep, I continued watching Silo on my iPad. There were snacks available in the galley. I just grabbed some packaged popcorn and cookies with some water.

Breakfast was served about an hour or so before landing. It was decent. The frittata was just OK. The pastries were warm and the sweet potatoes made a change from regular potatoes. The fruit was also fresh and ripe.

We would have landed early but we circled around Heathrow for about a half-hour. The visibility near the ground was really bad. I don’t think the ground was actually visible until we were at about 300 feet. Wheels touched down at 8:34.

We actually parked at a gate not a remote stand, which is worse for someone like me making what I thought was a tight connection to a different terminal. I had to walk the length of T3 before getting to Flight Connections. Luckily, the bus arrived just as I did. I decided to visit the North BA Lounge this time as I had just been in the South Lounge last month on the way to Dublin.
