Recently, I went to the UK for a special trip with my brother. It’s the first time we’ve taken a trip without either of our families in about 20 years. The trip came about because I noticed there were two Liverpool home matches within four days of each other. For the Europa League match, I was invited to enjoy the executive lounge, one of the nicest and most exclusive match day experiences. As my brother wasn’t arriving until the next day, I invited a friend from the Liverpool Atlanta supporters club to join me. For the EPL match on the following Sunday, my brother has a ticket connection through the club who could help us obtain tickets. When we told our cousin in Leeds that we were headed over, the timing worked out for us to visit him on the Saturday and attend the Leeds home match where we were in an Executive Box thanks to our cousin’s friend. As it turned out, I managed to attend three matches and amazingly, two of them were in suites/boxes.
I flew over to the UK from JFK on American Airlines in business class, booked with 57,500 American miles plus $20 in taxes/fees. The ticket included a connecting flight to Manchester. I positioned to JFK using 7600 SkyMiles and got to try the Premium Select seat on a Delta 767-300. At JFK, I got to visit the Greenwich Lounge for the first time. For the return, I flew on British Airways from Manchester to Heathrow and then on to Atlanta in First Class. That cost 85,000 Avios plus around $600 in taxes/fees. The First Class flight was excellent, but due to a delay on the first flight, I did not get to visit any Heathrow lounges on the return. We stayed at the Aloft in Liverpool, which I’ve reviewed before. It’s in a great location, but is nothing special.
I’ll break this report down with most of the focus on the travel aspects, but I’ll also mention the suite life and great football we enjoyed at the matches. I’ll update the links below as they go live.
