The options for places to stay for a night in Lake Tekapo were limited. I checked the Peppers Resort, which is bookable via Accor, but it was not allowing one night reservations. I had a Delta Stays credit to use, but I decided to use that in Wanaka instead. My Capital One Venture X $300 travel credit was also available and I checked that portal. I found a nice looking property called the Grand Suites available for $363 for the night. It was more than I wanted to spend, but anywhere decent was pricing at that level or we would have been stuck in a hostel type accommodation if we wanted something cheaper. I used 6300 points to cover the excess over $300 making the stay “free.”
We arrived around 2:30pm and checked in. The lobby was nice with big picture windows out to the surrounding mountains.

There are several buildings on the property and we were in the one next to the main lobby with a nice view of the lake area despite being on the ground floor. I was able to park right outside our room. The rooms here are all considered suites although ours was open plan. There are kitchenette facilities in each suite.

On the desk was a booklet with various tours and restaurants in the area. We ended up using the recommended stargazing tour and I’ll have a review of that in the next post.

The bed was comfortable and there were plenty of outlets and charging ports in the room. The shower had good water pressure as well. There were nice views out of the sliding glass doors and you could just about see the lake. I would expect the upstairs balconies can see a bit more of it.

We could exit the room, walk between the buildings and get to the path that led directly to the town and the lake so I didn’t use the car except to drive to the stargazing tour as it was too dark to walk there.
We decided not to pay for continental breakfast at the hotel and just ate our leftovers before we left for Mount Cook. While it was obviously expensive, at least I was able to book this hotel using a Capital One portal credit and points to avoid using cash. It fit our needs for a one night stay on Lake Tekapo and I would recommend it especially if there is limited availability in the area when you are passing through.
