UK Weekend Trip Part 3 – Great Scotland Yard Sherlock Suite Review

We decided to return to the Great Scotland Yard as we had a great stay last time we were in London. I won’t go into all the details again as I reviewed the hotel fairly recently including the hotel facilities. I will mostly just detail our suite and what we had for the included Globalist breakfast. The hotel is part of the Hyatt Unbound collection, a brand that allows for very individualized experiences while keeping the Hyatt status benefits for those who qualify.

The hotel still cost the same 25,000 points per night (Category 6) although I expect that to increase, perhaps due to the Hyatt award chart changes with five price points instead of three and/or perhaps also to a category level change. As I used all points this time, I could also apply a Suite Upgrade Award to our stay. The standard suite at the hotel is the Koestler suite (322 sq. ft.). The day before our arrival, I noticed that we had been further upgraded to a Sherlock Suite (441 sq. ft.).

When we arrived on a Friday morning around 11am, our suite was not quite ready. We left our bags and went out for a walk and some lunch. I received a call around 1:30pm that our Sherlock Suite was ready and we returned to the hotel. The hotel had already put our bags in the suite which was nice.

The suite was very nice, although I’m still not sure about the Sherlock theme as there were more crime/Scotland Yard related memorabilia and art in the regular room we had last time. The entrance had a large closet along with a safe. That opened into a large living room with a separate dining area. The bedroom was separate and the bathroom was large with a separate toilet (Toto) and a huge shower. The main difference from the Koestler suite is apparently the separate dining area, a larger bedroom and larger bathroom.

We received a nice note welcoming us back to the hotel along with some shortbread biscuits. We also had included use of the soft drinks and snacks in the minibar.

I do think there’s something to the idea that a repeat stay gets you a further upgrade at certain hotels. I’ve had this happen at other places as well. It’s also possible that they just honored the concept of an upgrade for Globalist members from one suite to a nicer suite, but that’s not common especially at a hotel with a very limited number of suites.

Breakfast actually is now available at two different restaurants in the hotel (The Parlour and The Yard), although on both mornings we had it, we were too early for The Parlour. The Yard was pretty much as we remembered, with a small buffet with things like baked goods, fruit, juices and cold cuts.

There is also a menu of made to order dishes. Note there are no prices as this is included for Globalists.

On the first morning, we both ordered the oats as we were a bit queasy from our Indian food and fish and chips the day before. On the second morning, we were feeling better so I got the shakshuka and my wife got the pancakes. All of it was great.

I received a letter upon check-in with a welcome and explanation of my benefits along with a voucher for two gin and tonics in the bar. I was able to use the voucher to get a Guinness instead.

We were proactively offered late checkout, but did not need it on this stay. Overall, we were pleased again with the location, service and quality of this hotel. If the price in points goes up significantly, I may look elsewhere next time, but if it remains a good value on points (or to use a Category 1-7 free night certificate), we’ll probably just stay there again next time we’re in London. The convenience to the theatre district, restaurants, and transit make this hotel a winner.
