I arrived at the Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha just after midnight local time, but it was after 4am in Thailand where I had just come from, although I hadn’t really acclimated to the time change anyway. The front desk agent apologized that there was no suite upgrade available, but I wasn’t too bothered for a one night solo stay. He did say I was upgraded to a club room which gave me access to the Regency Club. I booked the hotel for 5,000 Hyatt points as it is a Category 1 property. The cash price was around $120 when I booked.
I was proactively offered 4pm checkout for the following afternoon and told that I could have complimentary breakfast in the restaurant on the first floor.
My room was on the 7th (top) floor and was a fairly standard recently renovated Hyatt Regency room.

There was a welcome amenity of fruit, which I ended up snacking on the following afternoon.

There was also another one of these master controls on the nightstand which was nice to be able to turn off all the lights at once.

When I arrived, the England women’s team was about to go into a penalty shootout in the Euro quarter-final, so I found that on the TV and watched it before I crashed for the night.
I slept quite well for about five hours, which was probably the most uninterrupted amount of sleep I got on this trip. Here’s the view from my room in the morning with a dirty window:

I went down to the restaurant for breakfast. It was in the main restaurant on the first floor. The hotel actually had several other restaurants serving different types of cuisine, but I didn’t get a chance to check those out.

There was an extensive buffet with a made to order egg station. It wasn’t as good as the Grand Hyatt in Bangkok, but for what is basically an airport hotel, the breakfast was pretty good. I ordered an iced latte to go with my breakfast.

After breakfast, I went on a desert tour that I will have a detailed review of in my next post. Although I didn’t get a chance to use them, I grabbed some pictures of the pool and gym.

I also took a peek at the club lounge before I left. It was on the ground floor not far from the reception area.

After my tour, I took advantage of the late checkout to nap and shower ahead of my long journey home which was going to take about 32 hours including lounge time. I was going to take the 3:30pm shuttle to the airport (they leave on the 1/2 hour to the airport and on the hour from the airport), but I was ready around 2:45pm so I just took a $5 Uber instead rather than waiting around.
While it’s not the lap of luxury, the Hyatt Regency Oryx Doha is a comfortable and pleasant place to spend an overnight layover. If you have a bit longer or want to walk around Doha’s tourist sites (I wasn’t going to do that in 108 degree heat!), you can stay in a really nice property downtown or in the Corniche area like the Four Seasons, Ritz or Andaz for much less than typical US or European rates. For my purposes of a quick overnight, this hotel worked perfectly.
