Antigua Trip Part 2- Hermitage Bay Review – Suite, Resort and Activities

So, we’ve arrived at Hermitage Bay from Antigua airport on a quiet Saturday afternoon. In this post, I will show you the resort and our suite as well as discuss some of the activities on offer (spoiler alert: not many!)

On arrival, we sat near the pool area while our documents were checked and we waited to be taken to our room.

It was the only time I sat near the pool as our suite was on the beach so I just swam in the ocean. We were also close enough to the various bars and restaurants that we could just hang in or by our suite when not eating or doing an activity.

Here are a few pictures from around the resort.

We were in Suite 8 which was third from the end of the beach. The numbers were not sequential as I suppose the villas were built at different times. We were driven over there in a golf cart, although it would have been quicker to walk there along the beach from the pool area.

As you can see, there were tons of seating options including two loungers, two chairs and a table, a swinging day bed, a fixed day bed and a swinging chair. There was seating for at least nine or ten people. There’s also a foot wash visible in the bottom right of the picture. Here’s a better view of the seating.

The front entrance was on the left side behind the swinging chair. Inside, there was a large living area in the front near the glass door.

The windows just had screens on them so we kept the shutters closed to keep the cool air inside. The TV comes out of the panel on the desk there. You can see it peaking out a bit. It was nice to be able to watch Netflix at night and then put it away so that we had a clear view to the beach from the bed during the day.

There was a minibar plus snacks and coffee/tea facilities on the right side of the bed. We didn’t use the minibar much as we were close to the main restaurant and bars. I could see using it more if I was in a hillside villa which is more of a pain to get down and back up from.

The bathroom was behind the bed and there was no door (just an opening) since the A/C vent was in the center of the ceiling of the main room. There is an outdoor shower which is on the right side of the unit when facing it from the beach. We had a renovated unit with a separate W/C which I had requested before we arrived. There were double sinks and a big bathtub (which we didn’t use other than to hang our wet bathing suits on.)

There are about 10 beachside villas, a few garden villas (set back a little bit from the beach but on the same level) and about 15 hillside villas. The hillside villas obviously have great views, but the downside is getting back down and up the hills. Buggies are available, but you would have to wait for one each time. You can see some of the hillside villas in this picture below.

Breakfast and dinner were at the main restaurant attached to the lobby and pool area. Here’s the main lobby.

Lunch was at a new smaller venue further along the beach just past the watersports area. They also have a BBQ dinner here on Fridays (which we missed). There was live entertainment every day at both lunch and dinner. It ranged from a full band performing reggae-tinged covers to a steel band to a pianist.

There was also a beach bar between our villa and the main lobby where sushi and drinks were served every afternoon. The bars were open from 10am until midnight.

The included watersports available included paddleboarding, kayaking (including a clear kayak to see through the water below), snorkeling and sailing. We used the kayaks and snorkels every day. I also went on a one-hour snorkeling tour which was supposed to be $40, but I mentioned that it was included at the time I booked and they did not charge me for the tour. The tour took us about 10 minutes out from the resort around the nearby peninsula to a different reef and there were lots of different fish there.

There were jetskis and waverunners, but these are not available to rent as they belong to the owner of the resort. I was told his family and friends use them when they visit. The resort also has a beautiful sailboat that is being prepared for future use. I’m sure sunset tours will be very nice (but also probably expensive).

I took a couple of pictures as we sped away from the beach to go snorkeling in a different spot.

There was a fitness center not too far from our villa, although I didn’t bother using it as we had nice weather the whole time. If we had stayed longer, I would have probably visited a few times.

There was also a small store near the lobby, but thankfully my wife was too focused on collecting shells to bother checking it out.

On the last morning, I walked over to a new housing development that will be built on a hill near the resort. The roads have been put in, but the plots have not yet been developed. It was nice to get some exercise on those hills and get some views of the surrounding area.

On the way back, I walked by the spa and took a few pictures. They offered yoga or Pilates every morning and you can see the studio is in a great spot. You can see the spa menu online. We didn’t do any treatments.

As you can see, there was not a ton to do there, but that’s fine. We had a very relaxing few days, but by the end, we were ready to head home. I also stayed surprisingly active with snorkeling and kayaking to avoid gaining weight from all the food and frozen drinks. It’s not hard to enjoy a view like this from your villa every day.

In my next post, I’ll review the food, drinks and service at the resort. Despite the cash price (and the new Hilton points price), it wasn’t all perfect.

  1. What was teh location of the new housing development near the resort? The views from your pictures on the hills look stunning.

    1. It’s just west of it if you look on Google Maps. Pearns Hill. Looks like they are building a beach club first then starting on the estates. They are also going to pave the road toward the resort and new development as the last mile or so is brutal.
