State of the Blog – Three Years In

I’ve been posting on here for just over three years now and it’s been fun for me to post detailed trip reports from our travels. While this blog is just a hobby for me, I like being able to go back and re-live our trips.

Many points and miles-focused blogs are full-time jobs for their creators so they spend a lot of time pitching credit cards as that’s where they make their money – affiliate links. I don’t begrudge them that, but I don’t really read those posts anymore and just wait for them to post things like trip reports and interesting airline news. I have a full-time job as an attorney so this is just a fun diversion for me, but obviously it costs a little bit of money (hosting and WordPress) and quite a bit of my time.

I don’t post about credit cards much because there are plenty of other resources for that. Sometimes I’ll post about something major or a new and interesting card like Bilt, but I just generally post my links at the end of my blog posts figuring if you made it that far and you want to support the blog, you can do that. Know that I will always have the best available offers thanks to TravelFreely, even if it’s someone else’s referral link and not an affiliate link.

As for what people find interesting here, my Portugal trip report has been the most popular thing for page views although it was the first big one I posted right after we took the trip in 2022. Beyond that, the traffic has really ticked up the last few months. The most popular more recent posts have been reviews of the American Airlines Admirals Clubs at Atlanta and Washington DC, which I find amusing as I’m definitely a Delta flyer domestically most of the time. I think there’s probably not a ton of domestic lounge reviews out there as they tend to be a bit boring and most of the big points bloggers try and post about fancy first and business class lounges. My most viewed airline review is my BA First Class trip from last year.

Even though I thought I had an opportunity to join Boarding Area and give my blog a wider audience (and some ad revenue), for some reason which I could never figure out, that fell through. In any event, I plan to keep on blogging with an emphasis on trip reports and reviews and the odd post on other things that interest me in the world of points and miles.
