On our last morning at the Andaz, I woke up at 4am so I could watch Liverpool beat Newcastle 2-0. Thankfully, the wifi and VPN worked fine. Around 7am my wife got up and we had our last great Andaz breakfast. My wife took a final walk on the beach before we packed up our things. We had our driver pick us up at 9am, and we had planned a few stops on the way to our hotel in Ubud, the Viceroy Bali.
Our first stop was the Celuk Village jewelry shops. Unfortunately, the place he took us to was a very tourist-oriented large shop where they supposedly had people making jewelry. My wife could tell they didn’t have the right tools so she saw right through it. We quickly Googled another place that looked more authentic and had him take us there. Thankfully, it was a much better workshop and store inside the owner’s house. My wife bought a ring for one of the kids.
From there, we made a quick stop at Sukawati art market, but it wasn’t all that interesting. It was mostly clothing and not so much arts and crafts, which is what my wife was looking for. We moved on to the Tegenungan waterfall. We walked down to the main viewing platform.

From there, I walked down about 100 steps to the base of the waterfall where you could see and hear how powerful it is in rainy season.

After I walked back up, we went to the Ubud Monkey Forest. My wife was very excited for this as she loves monkeys. It was busy there, but the place is very large and you could find quiet spots just to observe the monkeys. You could pay for a “selfie” with the monkey, which means the handler just holds some food in his hand near the phone so it looks like the monkey is taking the picture but they are really reaching for the food. We didn’t bother paying. My wife sat down and several monkeys jumped on her lap. As long as you don’t touch them or look them in the eyes, they are friendly and don’t really bother people. Some tourists were of course stupid and violated these rules.

Our driver picked us up at the exit and drove us to the Viceroy to drop off our things. As our driver lived near Ubud on the west side of the town, I asked him if he would wait a few minutes while we checked in and then take us to a couple of places not far from his house.
We had him take us first to Gaya, which is an art studio and workshop. My wife took a class with the owner in Mexico in December and we were hoping to see her there, but unfortunately, she was out sick. Then, the driver dropped us near a bridge where you can walk into town so that we could walk along the main street and eventually reach the center of Ubud. From there, we got a Grab back to the Viceroy.
Despite the silver shop hiccup, we enjoyed our day of transit from Sanur to Ubud. We got to visit a few places without having to double back through the traffic. It cost 500k IDR or about $30 for the driver including bottled water.
