Bali Trip Part 5 – Cathay Pacific The Pier First Class Lounge HKG Review

Entering The Pier

As I mentioned in the previous post, connecting from First Class at Hong Kong provided no special services or priority lines. We were just herded through transfer security with everyone else. We found The Pier First Class Lounge near Gate 63 after initially missing it as it’s located off the middle of a travelator and you pass right by it if you don’t realize it’s there. Either we were sleep deprived or HKG needs to work on the signage.

The lounge is actually below the terminal one level and you take an escalator down to enter the lounge. Our lounge passes were checked (the gate agent at LAX provided them) and we were allowed to enter.

The lounge has a long hallway that connects the various areas – bar, restaurant, sitting area, small buffet, spa, showers, bathrooms – along both sides of the hallway.

It was busy at around 7:30am when we arrived. I was in need of a shower so I took care of that first. Thankfully there was no wait for a shower room.

We then visited the sit-down restaurant to grab (second) breakfast as it had been a few hours since we last ate onboard. The menu (unsurprisingly) was similar to the Cathay First Lounge in Heathrow.

I ordered the Chinese set and my wife got the Wonton noodles. When in Rome I guess. We also ordered iced lattes and the wellness drink.

Everything was very good although I’m not really a congee fan so I mostly skipped that. From the restaurant, we moved into the lounge area and found some seats. Unfortunately, the window loungers were all taken. There’s also a small buffet area located across the hall from the lounge area with self-serve drinks, pastries and prepackaged refrigerated sandwiches and salads for those in a hurry.

I also grabbed a picture of the bar area which was nearby. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.

The lounge was very nice, but busy at that hour with many international flights arriving early in the morning. Just like at the Qantas First Class Lounge LAX, OneWorld Emerald passengers traveling in any class of service can use the lounge so it tends to get busy with HKG being a major OneWorld hub. Funnily enough, I am currently OneWorld Emerald as a British Airways Gold member so I could have accessed this lounge (with a guest) even flying economy.

I realize these lounge reviews are fairly short and part of that is just being somewhat uncomfortable with taking too many pictures when the lounge is so crowded. Hopefully you are still getting a sense of what these lounges are like. You’ll see many bloggers who have hundreds of pictures, but they purposely arrive either right at opening or during a very quiet period so they can get the most pictures. We were just on a convenient connecting flight for our trip.

Around 8:45, we decided to make our way towards our gate, which was still a decent walk from the lounge. We didn’t have time to visit The Wing First Class Lounge as well on this trip and that lounge is about to close for major renovation.

We enjoyed The Pier First Class Lounge although it would have been nice to be escorted there coming off our 16 hour first class flight, but these are first world (first class?) problems. I did notice on our trek to the gate that the Chase Sapphire and Amex Centurion lounge were much more centrally located for those who who don’t have access to the Cathay lounge.
