Renting a Car in Los Cabos, Mexico

Mexican Porsche (Nissan March)

Todos Santos is about an hour and 20 minutes from Los Cabos airport. While there is a shuttle service, we knew that we wanted the flexibility of a rental car. I first booked with Hertz for about $280 for a compact car. Then I read the Hertz México reviews, and they were terrible. The art studio where my wife’s workshop was being held recommended a local company called Cactus. I looked them up and they had generally good to excellent reviews. I also emailed back and forth with their location manager who matched the Hertz price and included third party liability insurance which is mandatory in Mexico and can be expensive. My credit card covered the collision damage waiver.

We found the Cactus rep outside arrivals with a sign. We had another family in the shuttle with us and we made the short drive over to the rental lot just off the airport. The paperwork was quickly completed. I ended up pre-paying for the tank of gas as I didn’t want to deal with getting gas on the way back to the airport. In the end, I think they overcharged me a bit for that relative to the local price, but I chalked it up to paying for convenience.

The car was a tiny Nissan March, but it was big enough for the two of us and our bags. As we loaded up the car, the Cactus rep referred to it as a Mexican Porsche, which was pretty funny. The car had about 120,000km on the odometer (72,000 miles), but it ran fine. In fact, I drove it about 400km over the three days and returned it just about empty. Despite the tiny tires and the tiny engine, it worked fine over dusty dirt roads and the nice highway between Todos Santos and Cabo San Lucas. It had a USB connection, but no Apple CarPlay, but that was fine as I could still listen to the GPS directions through the car audio.

When returning the car, they drove us back to the airport terminal in our car which made it easy and quick. The price was as advertised and there were no extra charges to haggle over or dispute. I highly recommend Cactus if you need to rent a car at Los Cabos airport.
