Status Run to the UK Part 9 – Dishoom Review

This will be a short segment of the trip report, but I wanted to highlight what a great dinner I had at Dishoom. If you’re not familiar with this restaurant, it’s now a chain of Indian restaurants across London with a few in other UK locations as well. The original location was in Covent Garden where I visited before I went to the theater nearby.

I arrived around 6pm as my show was at 7:30pm so I was trying to time it reasonably well. I didn’t expect Dishoom to be that busy on a Monday at 6pm, but I was wrong. There was a long line of people already waiting. Dishoom only takes reservations for parties of six or more. A lady came around to take down my name and said it should be about 25 minutes. I asked about sitting at the bar but was told that you could only order drinks there. Interestingly, as it was chilly, they also brought around small cups of hot chai tea which was a nice touch.

They were pretty accurate with the wait time as I was seated by 6:30. I let the waitress know that I had a 7:30 curtain and she said that was fine and they were used to that. Here’s the all-day menu.

I knew that I was going to get Chicken Ruby which is a famous dish at Dishoom. Ruby actually is short for Ruby Murray, which is cockney rhyming slang for curry. I asked the waitress for a starter recommendation. She recommended the lamb samosas so I went with that.

The waitress also recommended a Dishoom Margarita and it was very good.

The samosas were excellent, especially when paired with the different sauces including spicy and mint. The pastry was flaky and the lamb delicious.

Next up was the Chicken Ruby. I decided against ordering rice as I would rather eat all of the curry than fill up on rice. I ordered a roti rather than a naan for the same reason.

The sauce was so good, I ordered another roti so I could finish all of it. I don’t know how they make it, but it was definitely one of, if not the, best curries I have ever had.

While you may have to wait in a long line, it’s definitely worth trying to eat at Dishoom when you’re in London. There’s probably a location near to where you’re staying or near to where you’re going for the evening. You can of course also have lunch or even breakfast there as they are open all day.
