Our flight to Tokyo from Ho Chi Minh City was showing on time. This flight was going to be a short redeye, about six hours, so it would be tough to get much sleep.
ANA 892 SGN-HND 787-10
Scheduled: 22:45-06:40 (+1 day)
Actual: 22:46-06:11 (+1 day)
We boarded through door L2 and turned left. I had put us in “true” window seats in this staggered configuration. We were in 4K and 6K. The flight attendant asked why we didn’t want to sit together and I explained that neither of us wanted to be right on the aisle on an overnight flight.
Despite this being a very new aircraft, the configuration was the same as ANA’s older 787s with a 1-2-1 but alternating closer to aisle and closer to window seats on each side. Getting into the seat was a tight squeeze around the console.

A basic amenity kit plus slippers were provided.

We were offered a predeparture beverage of some sort (I don’t remember as I was pretty tired by this point). As we pushed back, I had to use my handheld fan as the plane was warm and there were no overhead air vents.
We were wheels up at 22:59 and I tried to log on to the Wi-Fi as we passed 10,000 feet, but I could not get it to work. I wasn’t sure how the meal service would work on this flight, but I was pleased to find out that it was just a drink service after takeoff and breakfast before landing, which made more sense on a short redeye. You could still order light dishes if you were on a different sleep/food schedule than we were.
Here is the menu:

I ordered a glass of sake and it came with some snacks.

After that, I reclined my seat and tried to sleep for a while. I think I got about 90 minutes sleep. Unfortunately, the lights were turned on two hours before landing which seems a bit early. Perhaps economy needs that long to complete breakfast service, but it should not take that long in business class.
I decided to watch the movie Next Goal Wins, as it’s about my old high school soccer coach, Thomas Rongen. Unfortunately, it was not the best movie. On the bright side, I ordered the Japanese breakfast and it was really good.

I was still a bit hungry afterwards so I got a bowl of Udon and the special ANA drink, both of which were excellent.

Service was concluded about 45 minutes before landing and the crew made their preparations for landing. We got some nice views of the sunrise over Tokyo as we landed early.

We pulled into our gate at Terminal 3 and we followed the signs for transit passengers. This regional business class flight on ANA was very pleasant, although I’m not really a fan of the staggered configuration as it’s very tight to get in and out plus the seat width isn’t great for sleeping. We’ll probably try not to book any long-haul flights in this configuration in the future.
