SE Asia Trip Part 21 – Hue to Da Nang by Car

Hai Van Pass

I was very impressed with the company I chose for transportation down to Da Nang. Da Nang Private Car was flexible and responsive. I was in contact with the sales manager via WhatsApp for several months and decided on a 10am pickup from Hue with a stop at the Hai Van Pass and Lady Buddha outside Da Nang before we arrived at the Hyatt Regency. In the end, we changed the pickup time, added two additional lengthy stops and there was no additional charge. The total price was around 1.9M VND or $74. I also gave the driver a nice tip.

The driver was on time. We headed out of Hue and our first stop was at Lang Co Beach just north of the Hai Van Pass. My wife had read that there were good shells there and she was not disappointed. She walked the beach for about 45 minutes and found a good haul of shells and other beach debris. I walked for a bit and then rested in the shade. The beach was basically empty.

From there, we drove the Hai Van Pass, which is where the mountains come close to the sea, as you can see in the picture above. We made a quick stop so I could hop out and take some pictures. It reminded me a bit of mountain roads in Maui or the Pacific Coast Highway in California.

Our second added stop was a pottery shop in Da Nang. It gave us chance to drive through the city and our driver found parking right outside. My wife bought a couple of things and we finally moved on to our last stop, the Lady Buddha.

There’s a peninsula outside Da Nang called Monkey Mountain where the Lady Buddha sits on a cliffside. We parked nearby and walked over to see the Buddha. There were also lots of statues and pagodas there.

As it turned out the Buddha was built fairly recently so it’s not a historical site, but still impressive. From there, we moved on to our destination, the Hyatt Regency Da Nang where we arrived around 1pm.

You can get from Hue to Da Nang in two and a half hours if you don’t make any stops, but we were glad the company was flexible and allowed us to stop in some places we requested at the last minute. I highly recommend Da Nang Private Car for any transportation needs between Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue.
