2024 SE Asia Trip Report Introduction

Hai Van Pass – Vietnam

Well, we finally took our trip to South East Asia! Just like last year’s safari, I had to cancel and rebook this trip multiple times before we finally got to go. After my wife’s ankle surgery in January, I pushed the trip back to the first two weeks of April. I had to give up hard to find round-trip open-jaw business class award tickets booked with ANA miles, but when I rebooked the trip, I flipped the order. We started in Singapore, then went to Cambodia and ended in Vietnam.

We flew out on Singapore Airlines business class nonstop from LAX on one of the world’s longest flights. In Singapore, we stayed at the Conrad Centennial using our Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts credits. From Singapore, we flew on to Siem Reap, also in Singapore Airlines business class, where we stayed in an amazing suite at the Park Hyatt. We traveled from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh by car, where we stayed at the new Hyatt Regency. From Phnom Penh, we flew to Ho Chi Minh City on Qatar Airways fifth freedom flight in business class (which was kind of ridiculous for a 45 minute flight). After several days and nights exploring Ho Chi Minh City while staying at the Park Hyatt, we flew on Vietnam Airlines to Hue where we spent one night at a boutique hotel and saw some Vietnamese history. We were then driven from Hue down to Da Nang with a few stops (including the one pictured above) where we ended the trip with two nights beachfront at the Hyatt Regency with some time in Hoi An buying suits and seeing the ancient town. We flew back to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam Airlines business class before two business class flights on ANA to New York via Tokyo, including a flight in The Room. From JFK, we flew Delta home to Atlanta.

It was a long and fun trip. In fact, we were gone for 19 days as we had three days in Southern California before we left for Asia. I’ve broken the trip down into (too many) parts and will try and get all of this posted over the next month or so. I will activate the link to each part as they get posted.
