Logistics of Packing for Two Trips at Once

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam

As we head out on our extended California/South East Asia trip, we’ve run into some packing issues. We want to pack as light as possible for Singapore, Cambodia and Vietnam as we can do laundry there very cheaply. Companies will come pick up your laundry at the hotel and return it to you same day for something like $1 per kilo.

Packing for that portion of the trip was fairly easy. We’ll bring shorts, T-shirts etc. for the hot weather plus one or two nicer shirts just in case we go for dinner at a fancier restaurant.

For our three nights in California, we needed to bring warmer clothes. It’s in the 50s there with rain forecast. On top of that my wife has a court hearing to attend so she has to bring business attire. Not only do those clothes weigh more and take up more space, we don’t need them after this weekend. So, what to do?

In the end, I packed a separate small duffel bag with our California stuff. We’ll use it over the weekend then ship these clothes home Sunday before we leave for Singapore. I’ll fold up the duffel and bring it with us in my suitcase so that we have room for souvenirs (or perhaps for clothes bought at a Hoi An tailor.

Hopefully, this will work out. I may have to try and find some Priority Mail boxes and send the clothes home from the hotel as I think most of the FedEx/UPS places will be closed for Easter Sunday – ugh.
