Suite Life of Football Part 9 – British Airways LHR-ATL First Class Review

Hurry up bus!

As I mentioned, I was unfortunately leaving from Terminal 3 which meant that not only did I have to make a hurried connection from Terminal 5, but I also missed out on the BA Concorde Room. When I booked this flight, it was scheduled from Terminal 5, but BA switched this a few weeks before my trip. I paid 85k Avios plus about $650 in taxes and fees which included the connecting flight from Manchester.

BA227 LHR-ATL
Scheduled: 15:35-20:15 (-5 hours)
Actual: 15:45-20:17 (-5 hours)

We boarded a few minutes late and I was still sweating from my connecting flight exertions. The friendly flight attendant escorted me to my seat (2K). I asked for champagne, club soda and a cold towel which were promptly delivered along with mixed nuts.

I’ve flown BA F a couple of times before and had a mixed experience in terms of service. On this flight, the service was excellent. The seat on the 777-200 is the older F seat without a door, but still provides a large amount of personal space and pretty good privacy.

The footrest is completely open, meaning it’s easy to get comfortable if you want to rest. The screen is not the greatest, but I watched my own downloaded content anyway. Wi-Fi is free for F passengers and I was able to stream some shows from my DVR.

Headphones are provided (I didn’t need them). There are multiple USB ports and an AC outlet. The seat controls are easy to use, but there are no overhead air vents.

My proactive flight attendant brought me a “lounge suit” AKA pajamas as she could see I was still kind of discombobulated from my run through the terminal. I washed and changed into the comfortable loungewear.

The amenity kit had lots of goodies and came in a nice bag.

I had a look at the menu and provided my choices to the flight attendant. Service is totally a la carte so I could have had my first meal later, but I was hungry given the lack of catering on my connecting flight from Manchester.

I ordered a Johnnie Walker Blue on the rocks along with the smoked salmon appetizer, soup and fish for my main course. I also asked for them to hold a burger for me for the second meal later in the flight.

We had a long taxi out from Terminal 3 and we were wheels up around 16:17. We climbed out through the rain and had a really smooth flight all the way across the Atlantic once we were above the clouds.

My drink soon arrived with the canapes.

I switched back to the LPGS champagne with my meal as none of the wines really interested me.

I was told they had run out of the first class smoked salmon appetizer, but I could have the one from business class if I wanted, which was fine. It was actually similar to the dish served on my flight from London to Manchester the previous week, just on a nicer plate.

Next up was the soup. I love soup on a plane for some reason and this one did not disappoint.

The fish was cooked perfectly and very well-presented. It was served with mashed potatoes and a side of grilled vegetables. The little container is lobster sauce.

I decided on the crepes suzette for dessert as my mom used to make that when we were kids as a special treat. They were served with ice cream and were delicious.

After the meal, I reclined my seat and slept a bit. The seat is very comfortable for lounging or resting.

When I woke up, I watched a few shows from my DVR and started the new season of For All Mankind on my iPad.

About 90 minutes before landing, I had the second meal. I started with the caprese salad.

Then it was time for the burger, which was huge.

It was a great burger. The only criticism is that the cheese was not melted. I couldn’t resist a final dessert of chocolate mousse and strawberries.

We landed just about on time and had to taxi across the airport to Concourse F. I was able to get an Uber fairly quickly and was home by 9:30pm when I went right to bed after a long day.

It was a great brothers trip to Liverpool (and beyond). I hope we don’t have to wait 20 more years to have another trip together.

Next up for the Empty Nesters is our long-awaited trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore in April.
