Suite Life of Football Part 1- Positioning to JFK in Delta Premium Select (Seat)

To get to my American Airlines business class flight across the pond, I first had to get to JFK airport. I booked a flight on Delta to arrive at JFK around 5pm with my international flight departing at 8:40pm. I realize for many people this is cutting it a bit close on separate tickets/airlines/terminals, but I wanted to be able to work for half a day and minimize my time away for this trip.

Lucky for me, Delta was using an internationally configured 767-300 with Delta One, Premium Select, Comfort Plus and Main Cabin seats. As a Delta Platinum Medallion, I was able to automatically select a Comfort Plus seat at the time of booking. In this configuration, the Premium Select seats qualify as Comfort Plus for domestic flights.

The seats are configured 2-2-2 so I selected an aisle seat in the middle section which allowed me to access the aisle and not have anyone climbing over me. There are only three rows of these seats so I grabbed one of the last available ones even though I booked a couple of months out. I even took myself off the First Class upgrade list so that I would be sure to try out the Premium Select seat for the first time.

Before the flight, I spent some time at the A17 SkyClub and had lunch there. My flight boarded from the A concourse, which frankly is kind of silly for a 767 with over 200 seats as there is literally nowhere for many of the passengers to sit at the gate area in that concourse. I was surprised we weren’t boarding at one of the international gates.

We boarded just about on time and I grabbed a few pictures of the seat, which was as wide as a regular domestic first class seat with a few more bells and whistles. The seat had foot and leg rests, two headphone jacks (one on the screen and one on the armrest), a coat hook, and a spot for your phone (or drink) on the center armrest.

There was both USB and A/C power for each seat in the center. Given the fewer number of seats in this section, there was plenty of available overhead space. Service was typical domestic Comfort Plus service, with a drink and snack.

I passed the time by watching Barbie. Frankly, I’m not sure what the fuss was about as it was OK, but nothing amazing. There were a few funny scenes and lines, but it was mostly pointless, which I suppose makes it a good airplane movie. We arrived a few minutes late, which was fine as I had plenty of time to make my connection.

At JFK, I had to make the first of three inter-terminal connections on this trip. I walked up almost the entire length of T4 to reach the Airtrain. Then I squeezed on board the crowded train and had to push my way off at T8. At T8, I had to walk quite a way to find check-in and security.

It was literally a 1.25 mile walk from one gate to the other (plus the train), but I made it to the Greenwich Lounge with plenty of time to relax before my next flight.
